What did you like most about this instructor and course?

  1. That we were able to choose our own topic. It made the course more engaging because I cared and was invested in the topic.
  2. Instructor open to all feedback - willing to chance material/assignments to meet class needs.
  3. I liked about an oral, or an audio, feedback on the classwork.
  4. This instructor and the terms of the course encouraged me to think much differently than I am accustomed to which was frustrating and fulfilling simultaneously.
  5. This is a class that u truly get out what u put in. The instructor is helpful and fair.
  6. Use of examples, how he takes time every class to make sure that everyone understands the assignments.
  7. Prof. Mueller is energetic and enthusiastic about teaching, and he seems genuinely invested in his student's education. This course proved to be beneficial to my writing process and educational career.
  8. I like how he encouraged us to think outside of the box and he was always available to help us if needed, even outside of class.
  9. He was always prepared for class, clear with instructions, and gave relevant and practical assignments.
  10. That we were able to pick our own topics.
  11. Assignments b/c it helped us reach the classroom objectives.
  12. Professor Mueller was very approachable, helpful, and understanding. He really helped me to broaden my thinking process when doing research.

  15. He effectively stimulates the thinking of the entire class. One of the best professors I've had here (I'm a senior).

What did you dislike most about this instructor and course?

  1. The pace for each step in the research process was a bit too slow.
  2. The focus on technology. This is an English course, not an applied technology course.
  3. In the first few week of semester, it took way more time in the explanation of softwares or 'google doc.'
  4. I wanted to focus a lot more on the core principles of research in class - especially since there were so few students. I wanted more of the class work to relate directly to our research papers.
  5. -
  6. -
  7. Sometimes I felt like my personal goals for the class were so different from the other student's that it was at times-albeit rarely-difficult to gain constructive help/criticism from my peers.
  8. -
  9. I can't think of anything.
  10. The 100 pt grading scale.
  11. Sometimes it seemed we did not do much, especially when we had to read the articles.
  12. Nothing about the professor. I personally didn't find the worknets helpful but it's useful to know and understand them.

  14. -
  15. The course feels a bit generalized-But I don't know what to do about that.

What constructive suggestions do you have for this instructor or course?

  1. Adapt the worknets for each source used in the paper. Maybe require all four to be done for each source used. This might help to fill the slow pace.
Make clear that quotes should be added after the students response to their sources is typed. Consider assigning the worknets mid-semester rather than so early. That sort of confused my writing method a bit.
I have purchased the books this semester. A very stimulating class! Good job!
  2. Pick one or 2 technological applications to use/focus on .
  3. It's tough class for instructor because of the diversity of students' interests. Forming groups with closely related interests early in the semester and providing more groupw work and presentation would work better for this type of class setting. Thank you very much.
  4. It would be great if more of the class was dedicated to the one final project. e.g. less "busy work" - SSR journals and in class exercises that didn't translate especially well to my writing. I wish I had spent more time developing my ideas in draft form (maybe more than just 2 draft turn ins) so our work was more full. While this class allows us much more time than other classes for this kind of thing - I wouldve benefitted from even more. I like the professor very much and was sufficiently inspired by him. This class really did change the way I thought about research for the better. I (as Ive told Dr. Mueller) only wish I'd've taken it earlie in my college career!
  5. Less SSR Journals. More worknets.
  6. It would help to remind students to review SSR journal entries when writing their research paper. I really love the use of google docs to share assignments and retrieve them later. I think my only concern about google docs is the formating of the spacing - I would have liked it double spaced and google docs doesn't do that. Not that you can change that though. For P2, I think it would be beneficial for it to be a little more structured. I felt like I had little structure when creating my draft. Possibly have specific chunks due at certain times such as the introduction, then part fo the body in addition then the conclusion in addition to the introduction and the body. The amount of writing necessary for the P2 drafts was confusing.

  8. I think this class definitely should be considered for becoming a hybrid class.
  9. Consider giving students the option to change topics after P1 is due, but have a cut-off date for said option if they do choose to change their topic. Students are likely to get sick of their topics or find something even more interesting and may want the option to choose something different.
  10. Try to understand where your students are coming from. I know that we are in college and adults but sometimes things happen and I feel like you were uncompassionate to students pleas. I came to you for help multiple times and more often than naught got the I don't know what to tell you response.
  11. Keep the projects and assignments but get rid of the reading. It did not seem that beneficial and it seemed like a waste of class time. Everything else is good.
  12. Fewer SSRs and less emphasis on the worknets.

  2. I appreciated instructor's openness to all students and students' ideas. However, I would have preferred a course less technology-dependant. The 1st several weeks were focused on setting up and learning all kinds of new applications and is very frustrating. I also would have appreciated more instructor feedback regarding research assignment and less student feedback along the way.

  5. This class gives students an excellent opportunity. By allowing the students to pick research projects that match their interest, the benefits go way beyond fulfilling one general education requirement and 3 credit hours. I know it's harder work for the instructor and as a student that plans to enter a Masters and possibly a PhD program I appreciate the jump start on the research I'll need to do in the future.

  7. I thoroughly enjoyed this class. The unique structure and individualized template was extremely enjoyable. I feel that time spend in this classroom was conducive to my learning and understanding of research writing, and I was inspired to work differently/better in my other classes as a result. I would suggest that nothing be changed in this class. In fact, if more teachers in the English department allowed each student the freedoms professor Mueller does I feel like teaching would be more impactful overall.
